Is it widely realised that the dead tree, slightly right of centre, didn't actually exist? Imagine John finishing the picture (without it) and realising that the eye is carried from the bright sky down-right instead of down-left to the horse. So he added the dead tree to block the sight-line. How do I know? He forgot to add any shadow! (EVERYTHING else has meticulous shadows.)
